EP 58 - What To Do When Your Mind Doesn’t Want To Change

You don’t have to believe everything you think, but we’ve been conditioned to think a certain way. It’s our responsibility to change those thoughts that no longer serve us. In today's episode we talk about the 3 surprising ways your mind can be a real jerk and what we can do about it. Inspired by Mel Robbins IG post we dive deep into how we can recognize these old patterns and set some new ones.

  1. Your mind loves what it knows

  2. Your mind will fight against anything it doesn’t know — Lets say you want to be build a new habit of waking up earlier to go to the gym because you want to live a healthier lifestyle. So you get up the first few days excited and ready. On the 3 or 4 day your body starts to reject this because it’s not used to it. And it’s telling you “hey, this isn’t what we’ve been doing for years, I dont like this, it’s too hard and annoying, stop it right now”. This is where we are able o have a real transformation because this is where we can re-condition the mind to think and act something new.

  3. Your mind tricks you into believing that THINKING about something is the same as DOING it

This makes it a little shocking that anyone can change at all but Mel gives us 2 simple steps of how you can change that:

  1. Tell your mind to shut up

    • I’m actually gonna add something here — just by noticing the fact that you’ve had a not so nice thought, is already great improvement and self-awareness. The second you notice your mind talking to you that way, you can re-direct it to think something else. It’s a good habit to develop because you start becoming more and more aware of how many times you talk to yourself that way.

  2. Start acting like the person you want to become

    • There is a lot of research specifically called Behavioral Activation Therapy that basically focused on ACTING like the person you want to become even when you don’t FEEL like that person yet. The action is critical because when your mind sees you taking action, it changed how your mind sees YOU.

    • What do they wear? How do they speak? Where do they eat? What do they eat? What are their habits? Etc once you know what that version pf you looks like, it’s easier to act like that version. If you don’t want to do the hard parts of work, but you know that your future self does it, do it to become them. It’s that simple. It’s hard but it’s simple.
